Act as filter, which is used to collect information and analyze it to create valuable report to Gavin. That’s what he told me this morning when I can not reply his step-by-step questions. In fact, I know my situation in the current team. Why did he say above words? I think it is because he wants me to improve myself in a short time. Gavin often is kind man with good manners, and what I should learn from him, is he can control his temperament well and always seemed as calmly. I must response more quickly and be brave in following general working.
On SuperMicro 936a platform with X7DCL-3 motherboard, it can not install Linux on the IDE Disk or CF cards via USB CD-ROM. This has been confirmed by SuperMicro Technical Support, who later suggests me to download the latest BIOS and try again. By the way, in other PC, burn the UIT OS in CF, and it will meet halting as system boot(mkdevices halt), while install UIT OS on SATA disk successfully, the init script in initrd.img and /etc/fstab should be modified with corresponding strings.
When compile new module file(for example, .ko), and put in /lib/modules/2.6.22-16 directory, it is necessary to issue “depmod -a” to update “module.dep” file, which is used by kernel to automatically insert module when system boots. “modinfo” is useful command to check module’s information.
I-SCSI Target is not included in the package built yesterday. Rae Chen told me to retrieve iSCSI-Target sources from svn, and then compile it in other virtue machine, which has been configured as compiling environment for BX1200. Note, it should add “make -C /source/linux-2.6.17 -m $PWD”, here /source/linux-2.6.17 is kernel source directory, and “-m” indicates the target directory. And then copied the created .ko to /lib/modules/2.6.17/ directory, and rebuild the installation package. Later I try the package in BX1200, and it still says ISCSI Target module is not loaded. While in command line, issue “depmod -a && modprobe”, it is loaded well. I have to fix this non-automatic loading issue tomorrow.
Inventec decides to return the unit to Taiwan for customer application.
On the new SuperMicro platform 936a(XDCL-3), whenever install Slax and CentOS5.1, both of them can not recognize the IDE-Flash card, while it can be viewed in BIOS setting. It makes the installation process more complicated, I have to install the system in other servers(Tyan 2U), and then replace the card. I should find a solution, or easy way to test.
There will have a meeting about BA880 tomorrow. Something wrong with them in UT. Yang Ke has reported this issue and sent me the relevant log. Perhaps it is related to BS3000e’s bug.
First off, in the linux kernel source, modify .config file to enable huge memory(>64GB). Then build the bzImage, and when issue “make modules_install”, set the target directory to keep the created modules. If do not identify the target path, it will be installed to /lib/modules by default. Second, in my local Mandriva Linux, download the latest BX1200 package, for example, put it into /tmp directory. Unpack the tarball file, and will see three sub directories: /boot, /etc and /opt. Enter the /boot directory, unzip the rootfs.tar.gz.zip, which includes all PHP codes, shell scripts and configuration files in /etc. Replace the kernel file, and /lib/modules/2.6.17. Then create new rootfs.tar.gz, and build new tarball package for huge memory. Later I test this on my local vmware. Note, initrd.img contains all simply boot scripts. It can be viewed by executing “zcat initrd.img | cpio -div”.
BX1600 platform arrives Shenzhen today, which makes a lot of noise. I have to identify the fan speed.
I do not know why Gavin interrupted my researching on 64bit building. Perhaps he became to be not satisfied with me, even did he not give me directors, while by other people. I feel uncomfortable in this situation. It’s my war, and I can not give in. Later Lin Peng told me the detail process, including how to create current BX1200 package. In fact, these steps are quite easy, even without new knowledge as to me. UIT_BX1200_2008.rar contains three directories, in which rootfs.tar.gz are PHP codes and shell scripts we developed, and with kernel image, boot files. Some other configuration files will be recorded in the flash card, these are open and can be viewed to the end customer. Go ahead, never give up!
Today is a terrible day, I’ve never seen Gavin was so angry with us. I know he does very care about BX1200 testing in 51.com, that will prove he and his team’s working. Gavin is a rule man and he want each member in his team must be flexible and understand his idea quickly. Perhaps for fear of lazy, I was warned for my poor performance in past days. I’m very upset for some issues, because I would have never expect this would happen. Sigh, I feel tried and want to avoid, but no case and no space left for me. I have to find myself again in shortly time.
It’s the first time that I build LFS successfully, while this new system has slow responses with keyboard. I will tune the performance tomorrow. And next step is much easier, to research BLFS.
Install the kernel source package:
#wget ftp://ftp.univie.ac.at/systems/linux/Mandrake/2007.0/i586/media/main/release/kernel-source-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586.rpm
In “vmware-distrib” directory, and invoke:
# perl vmware-install.pl
Note, do not invoke vmware-config.pl at above progress.
Download “vmware-any-any-update109”:
#cd vmware-any-any-update109
#perl runme.pl
This perl script will execute vmware-config.pl automatically.

This method has been proven in my mandriva2K7.
How to unique identify a computer? Google said CPUID and MAC address are two most widely used. However, CPUID is lease to modify than MAC. Later I find “hostid” command, which print the numeric identifer for the current host. However the hostid is related to the IP address of local computer so that it can not be depended.
CPUinfo’s BogoMIPS: The Linux measures BogoMIPS at start up in order to calibrate some soft timing loops that will be used late on. Or, it is measured provided in the Linux OS that indicates in a relative way how fast the computer processor runs.
Configure script problems: If something goes wrong while running the configure script, review the config.log file. This file may contain errors encounted during configure which were not printed to the screen.
Because there is not always enough Random Access Memory(RAM) available for compilation processes. It is a good idea to use a small disk partition as swap space. This is used by the kernel to store seldom-used data and leave more memory available for active processes.
To check if your host system used custom enhancements:
#debugs -R feature /dev/xxx
Toolslain: compiler, assemble, linker, libraries and few useful utility
We are going to try out production about BX1200 in few days. Inventec has confirmed that 18 pieces of SS2280 and attached 19 pieces of SJ2280(JBOD Devices) will arrive at Shenzhen at Feb 22nd. I discussed with Shan, Xiaoyu, and both of us agree to arrange the pilot production in Shenzhen Lab. Also we need 20 pieces 44pin Flash card, Shan will be responsed of buying these disks. Test team and Shan will do the job while they still need technology support by RD team.
Gavin assigned system-building to me, which is charged by Huang Pengcheng before. It is a good excise for self-enhancement. I will study LFS and do some testing in the following two weeks.
BX1200 knowledge protection: According to unique MAC information of network cards on board, it is able to create a key or called license to band with Flash card. The customer can not steal our achievement when they copy the content of flash card and try to apply it in other SS2280 platfrom, which they could buy from Inventec.
Though my suggestions perhaps are not always accepted or recognized as reasonable, it can not cut off my thinking. Keep good habit and do better to improve myself.
